• Hello, Goodbye

Jeffrey Nichols artist, teacher, music lover, dad

Welcome to my site and thanks for stopping by.   As an artist, I try to push beyond traditional ceramic surface decorating and glazing techniques, while still paying homage to classical pottery forms. The relationship between form and surface is an important impetus for the creation of my functional vessels and sculptural still-lifes. It is the visual interaction between the simple wheel thrown vessel and the color-laden surface that creates unity within the piece. I aspire to incorporate beauty, simplicity, and harmony within my art, while still expanding ceramic traditions, techniques, and perceptions. In this way, a greater sense of existence is evoked for each new object created. I hope you enjoy the work.   Currently, I am channeling the same creative energies I use as an artist into my position as Gallery Director at the Living Arts and Science Center. Through this position I develop, schedule, curate, and install between eight to twelve exhibitions annually in LASC’s three exhibition spaces as well as oversee all exhibition related programming. I also do a great deal of outreach. I travel to local schools to promote art and the gallery shows through project-based workshops and I oversee planning for our Day of the Dead Festival. There's so much great work to do locally in the arts and I'm glad to be a part of it all.

    Tell Me Why

    My teaching philosophy...

Being an artist is hard work. Therefore, students need to develop strong skills in the processes required to succeed in an art career. I achieve this by designing assignments that blend classical training with creative problem solving. The goal of teaching any art is to design course work that exposes students to techniques while encouraging independent, creative thought. I take teaching art very seriously. My foremost goal is to increase art literacy and understanding by designing courses and programs that educate and inspire.
